Starting at the Highway 36 bridge, we headed downriver to Yellow Jacket Shoals, where we played in the class III shoals before continuing. As we paddled on, we took in the breathtaking scenery; shoal lilies lined the shallows, while Spanish moss decorated the trees at the shore. Occasionally a Great Blue Heron would fly over, fishing for his lunch. We took out at the Pobiddy Road bridge. All in all, this was perhaps the most exhilarating stretch of the Flint River, and we had a blast!

Beginning at the site of the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, we paddled our kayaks and played on the Tallapoosa river for several hours. Luckily, few paddlers frequent this river, and we were happy with the solitude. Rolling hills stretched in all directions; rare shoal lilies were in bloom, and a lone bald eagle kept us company as we made our way downriver. The current was moderate and left us with ample opportunity for some "shoal surfing." This must be one of the most beautiful rivers in the Coosa river watershed.

This was a great group to spend an afternoon with. We appreciate what the Rangers do for us and also were impressed with the dedication they show for their familes. The Chaplain office did a terrific job of organizing the Retreat.
